Taking the Field

Bill Hartel founded Pennant Race Products in 1989 to provide unique, extremely limited edition baseball souvenirs to ballpark fans. A dentist by day, entrepreneur by night, and baseball fan year round, his first product was the Wrigley Field Playoff dirt pen which contained infield "Diamond Dust" collected at Wrigley Field on the day of the first 1989 NL Playoff game. He also produced notarized postcards impregnated with the infield dirt postmarked on the day of the game at the Wrigleyville post office.

Making Contact

One day in 1990 Bill received a carload of Comiskey Park seats from his father. Fourteen years and several garages later, he was politely asked by his wife to "do something with that old wood." Not many would think of turning them into pens but Bill did and so these historic stadiums, some demolished, are revived for writing checks, signing autographs and having a collectible artifact to keep score with at the game.

Tinker to Evers to Chance

At Tokens and Coins, Ward Wallau has been recycling nostalgic icons since 1991... originally inspired by the New York City Transit Token which he "repurposed" as cuff links. Our collections now include Scrabble, Typewriter Keys, Vintage Coins, Watch Movements and others. In 2006, Jennifer Mosden of Avery Foster felt Tokens and Coins should get in touch with Bill. We signed a license agreement to produce cuff links out of the same stadium seats that Bill used to make his BallPark Pens. When Bill's night job started to become a second day job, we offered to take over the time-consuming task of his growing business.

Now Tokens and Coins produces & sells the complete BallPark line of Pens, and Cuff Links. Bill has time not only for his dentistry, but for scouring his garage looking for the next creation: ballparkornaments.com
